| Today is the 4th of July and, of course, it brought to mind another story! We always had a lot of fun with cherry bombs and firecrackers (as you know from previous stories). One thing we liked to do was to stage very realistic WW II battles with my plastic army men (when they weren't getting run over by the electric train), using the huge arsenal of cherry bombs and firecrackers we always seemed to have an hand. We would bury a cherry bomb with just the top of the fuse sticking out and then put an army man over it and light the fuse. This, of course, was the result of stepping on a "land mine" and it sure blew the unfortunate soldier very high in the air! At other times, tanks, jeeps and other equipment were victims of "land mines" too. Sometimes whole units and their equipment would be totally wiped out with a big "artillery barrage" consisting of many cherry bombs and fire crackers being lit and thrown in their midst. Any "survivors" were quickly mowed down with fire from our BB guns! When you hit an army man with a BB, he would really fly backwards! (or "frontwards" if we staged an ambush from the rear). All this "combat experience" would have benifited me much more in Navy boot camp if we would have used BB guns instead of M-1 rifles! Certainly my shoulder wouldn't have been as sore! Sometimes warfare would be staged in our room with our BB guns! Hey, the walls never knew the difference due to all the dart holes in them, so the BB holes weren't that noticeable anyway! |
