| Since our paternal grandmother (Ollie) worked at Miami University, she always impressed on us during all of our kid years that, "You have to go to college! You can't even dig ditches without a college degree these days!" Well, after hearing that all of our kid years when we were young and impressionable, I decided "on the spur of the moment" (I was riding one of our horses at the time), that I would indeed go to college! Since I never applied myself during my public school years (even though the school officials said I was above-average in intelligence and had a very high I.Q.), I had to attend my first semester of college "on probation". This only lasted for 1 semester since I was on the Dean's List every semester of both college and grad school and made one of the highest grades in the history of the grad school in my "Comphrehensive Exam" (while working a full time job all through college and grad school). My professors said I was a genius. (Hey, they said it, not me!) Anyway... I only mentioned the latter in order to emphasize the next point, which is the final irony in all of this! I obtained 2 degrees, a Bachelor and a Masters (both Summa Cum Laude). Remember, I'm not stating what in since you wouldn't believe it anyway (ask one of my family members if you must know). Now, the FINAL IRONY to all this: When I retire in exactly 1 year, 168 days, 14 hours, 2 minutes, and 26 seconds in actual time in this instant, I will retire from the County as a DITCH MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR! Indeed, my grandmother was right! I went to college and I'm digging ditches! |
