| When Tim, Kit, and I were FINALLY old enough to go to the NOTE, we didn't have a car yet so we bummed a ride every Saturday night with Kit's older sister Carolyn. She had an old Studebaker that she named "The Stud". It had music notes, made from construction paper which were glued to the inside wall of the back seat (remember those, Carolyn???). It's odd how my "middle-aged" brain can recall those notes, but not the color or year of "The Stud"! We really looked forward to riding with Carolyn because not only could we smoke IN FRONT of everyone at the Note, but we could smoke IN FRONT of her in the Stud on the way to the Note! I don't think Carolyn smoked, but she didn't care if we did! As far as we knew, she never told on us (as if our parents didn't know anyway!) We thought that was COOL and that she was COOL! One of the neatest things I remember about the NOTE (other than our various acts of mischief, covered in previous stories), was doing the "Uncle Wriggly" which we learned from Carolyn's dancing friends at the NOTE. I STILL do it around my 2 daughters and at Wedding receptions! I keep it alive and am probably the ONLY one that still does it! I can't do it as well as when I first learned it at age 16, NOT because I'm too old, but because to properly do the "Uncle Wriggly", you have to have the proper shoes. It is best done while wearing "Beatle Boots", which had smooth soles, high heels, high sides, and pointed toes. (The pointed toes also came in handy to squish cockroaches in room corners too). Carolyn was really COOL, not only because she was older than us, but also that she was born in Liverpool, England! This was cool because it was the height of the "British Invasion" era of the early 1960's! One time, Carolyn, Kit, Tim, and I went to the theatre to see "A Hard Days Night" starring the Beatles, and Carolyn recorded the whole movie with a small battery operated reel to reel tape recorder on her lap! (Gee, Carolyn, I hope the "Movie Police" don't see this)! Tim and I eventually had the chance to buy "The Stud" from Carolyn for the tidy sum of $20.00! Unfortunately, our mother said she didn't want us to have our own car yet. (Hmmm, if you have read all the previous stories about Tim and I, I just can't imagine why?????) |
